ISLAY, KNOYDART AND LISMORE: STOPS ON THE WAY TO OTHER ISLANDS

Islay is a much bigger island than those I’ve mentioned so far; around 3,000 people live there. I was on my way to Colonsay and thought it a good plan to stop on Islay for a few days.

The ferry that sails between Kennacraig on the Kintyre peninsula and Islay is the only ferry I’ve taken that thinks it’s a cruise ship. It was the hand sanitisers, dozens of them, and this was long before the Covid-19 outbreak. I had the feeling that this feature alone was catering for the serious whisky travellers.

Many people associate Islay with whisky. This island has eight distilleries, the greatest concentration of distilleries in the world. Using pure spring water and rain-soaked barley, the taste depends, among other factors, on the shape of the still and the wood of the cask.

Display boards on the ferry telling us about the Finlaggan story caught my attention, and I decided to find out more. So as soon as we landed at Port Askaig I drove to the site, a little detour from the road to Bridgend. Situated around a pair of small islands in Loch Finlaggan, near Ballygrant, Finlaggan was the ancient seat of the Lords of the Isles in medieval times, and independent of the Scottish crown. New Lords of the Isles were crowned here.
